Elite Realty Group and local Scouts team up for annual tradition of passing out American Flags to Wilsonville neighborhoods

SUBMITTED PHOTOS - Pack 194, pack 199 and Troop 194 get ready to pass out flags Thursday, June 29. If you've ever wondered where the thousands of flags that line Wilsonville neighborhoods come from during the Fourth of July, you have Elite Realty Group and local Scouts to thank.

The pair have provided flags to Wilsonville residents every year since 1991, when Elite Realty Group founder Kathleen Walmsley started putting flags up in her Rivergreen neighborhood ahead of the nation's birthday.

But as her business grew she decided she wanted to do more, bringing in local Cub and Boy Scouts to help with her efforts.

"She was a very prominent broker in Wilsonville when she started doing the flags. She started with one neighborhood and expanded to all across the city," says Principal Broker and Owner Krisstine Jacobsen. "Eventually she decided to bring in the local Scouts and it's been a great partnership ever since. We're able to purchase the flags and give them a donation for their help as well."SUBMITTED PHOTO - Boy Scout Harrison Halsted places a flag in a Wilsonville lawn Thursday, June 29.

Walmsley died in 2013, but Elite Realty Group has continued the tradition. This year, Cub Scout Packs 194 and 199 as well as Boy Scout Troop 194 placed some 3,000 flags across Wilsonville. Pack 194 Leader Kris Troha says the annual event is a favorite of local Scouts, and one they look forward to continuing for years to come.

"This is a big service project for us, and it's always great to see Scouts go running down the street with their flags in hand," Truha says. "They're always really excited and any time you get young boys running they love it. When you get down to the end of a street and look back and see an entire row of flags waving in the breeze it's a pretty cool thing."

A card is attached to each flag to pay tribute to Walmsley and her service to the Wilsonville community over the years.
