Tonkin Gran Turismo announces new Wilsonville consolidation

New 23,500-square-foot dealership set for north Wilsonville in 2014

Ron Tonkin Gran Turismo, the oldest exotic auto dealership in the Portland metro area, recently announced it would be setting up shop at a new facility in Wilsonville.

The 23,500-square-foot building is still under construction, but the company hopes to begin offering new and used luxury vehicles ranging from Ferrari and Maserati to Lotus and Porsche.

Wilsonville Mayor Tim Knapp said the announcement is another piece of good news for the city’s economy, as well as auto enthusiasts buoyed by the recent news that the World of Speed racing museum will be moving into an 80,000-square-foot building currently occupied by Town and Country Jeep-Dodge of Wilsonville.

“It’s a different sort of a segment, but I think it will likewise be a fairly high-profile presence in Wilsonville that will attract certain enthusiasts who otherwise might not have a reason to come here,” Knapp said.

According to the company, the new facility will house both sales and auto service, combining functions in a single location for the first time.

Gran Turismo General Manager Art Smith said more than 40 new and used luxury vehicles should be in stock when the new facility opens its doors for business in January 2014.

Owner Ron Tonkin started his first Chevrolet dealership in Portland in 1960 at the age of 27. Six years later he opened a Ferrari dealership that continues in the form of Gran Turismo to this day.

“They have a long track record of dealing with those more exotic automobiles and have done very well with that,” Knapp said.

He added that perhaps Wilsonville could look in the future to build on the addition of Tonkin Gran Turismo and the World of Speed to turn Wilsonville into a destination for car enthusiasts.

“It would be great if we could build on several of these things,” Knapp said, “and become a kind of destination here where people who are headed to the West Coast could say, ‘We need to stop and see these interesting displays of vehicles’ that they otherwise would not see. There are lots of opportunities.”
