FLIR acquires more than 200 patents with DigitalOptics purchase

Wilsonville company buys maker of lenses and infrared optical components

Wilsonville-based FLIR Systems announced last week it has purchased “certain assets” of DigitalOptics Corporation’s micro-optics business.

The transaction is worth $14.9 million, according to FLIR, which describes DigitalOptics as a leading fabricator of wafer-scale specialty optics products. These include lenses, lens arrays, optical receivers and transceivers and various infrared optical components, whose products “are used in a wide array of industries and applications, including security, surveillance, photolithography, data communications, laser-based medical equipment and 3D gesture recognition,” according to a company press release.

FLIR CEO Andy Teich said buying DigitalOptics will give it both capability and cost advantages useful as FLIR moves into high-volume production of thermal imaging products.

The purchase also strengthens FLIR’s intellectual property holdings a good deal, with more than 200 patents and pending patent applications owned by DigitalOptics being included in the purchase.

FLIR stock rose 0.4 percent on the news, with shares rising in price to $33.14.

The company is based at headquarters located on Southwest Parkway Avenue in Wilsonville. It shares a campus with fellow optics company Rockwell Collins, as well as the Oregon Institute of Technology.
