New FLIR smartphone thermal imager hits the market

Wilsonville firm releases attachment for iPhone 5 and 5s


by: COURTESY OF FLIR - The FLIR One thermal imaging device for the iPhone is a groundbreaking tool that brings the Wilsonville companys thermal imaging technology to the smart phone world. Wilsonville’s FLIR Systems, Inc. announced July 22 its FLIR One thermal imaging accessory for smartphones will be available July 23 for pre-order online at flir.com/flirone.

The FLIR One is a lightweight accessory that transforms an iPhone 5 or 5s into a thermal imaging device using patented FLIR technology. The device displays live infrared imagery that allows the user to see the world from a thermal perspective.

It will also be available to buy in Apple Stores and on Apple.com in August.

FLIR One’s infrared lends itself to what the company calls "practical solutions" for consumers, from detecting energy leaks at to seeing in complete darkness. It's also the first company to bring those capabilities to a smart phone.

“FLIR is dedicated to developing and delivering technologies that provide users with a sixth sense,” said company President and CEO Andy Teich in a press release. “Based on technology that was formerly reserved for the military, FLIR One is the first in a new generation of affordable thermal imaging devices designed to inspire imaginative and innovative uses by consumers. This represents a revolutionary step forward for both FLIR Systems and thermal imaging.”

The company envisions its newest device serving a broad range of uses:

* Home improvement: Identify heat loss, energy inefficiency, and water leaks.

* Outdoor adventures: Observe wildlife day or night, survey a campsite, or find a lost pet.

* Security and safety: See at night, detect intruders, and see through light fog or smoke.

* Creativity: Observe abstract patterns and create artistic images.

FLIR One detects a broad range of temperatures and has a spot temperature measurement display. You also can capture photos or video and share via text, email, or social media through a FLIR One mobile app.

Other FLIR One apps will include FLIR One TimeLapse, FLIR One Paint and FLIR One Panorama.

It houses a rechargeable battery, which FLIR says is good for up to two hours of continuous use.

FLIR One is available in the U.S. for pre-orders on FLIR.com/FLIRONE for a current retail price of $349.99.
