One family has completely rethought how to use the square footage of extra garage space to suit its needs.

“Once only seen as a space to store lawn tools, bicycles, toys and extra storage space, garages are being rediscovered as space for more cars and shop space with taller ceilings and greater square footage,” said Michelle Johnson, a Realtor for Park Place Real Estate.

For the past 10 years, the family has used the six-car detached garage as space to house a manufacturing business.

The shop space, which is 40 feet deep and 60 feet long, includes a monitored security system, washer and dryer hookups, heat and air conditioning and a full bathroom and is prewired for TV, telephone and Internet. The interior is completely finished with sheetrock, insulation and paint.

It even includes a heated and cooled storage room, which one could tear down a wall in converting it into more vehicle space.

Though the garage is now acting like a shop and a business, it would also be a car enthusiast’s dream. The garage doors are commercial style and the space is equipped with commercial three-phase power with a separate panel, meter and transformer. The floor is a thick concrete with fiber strand reinforcement, which can hold heavier weights. On top of that, it is plumbed for air JOSH KULLA - According to Realtor Michelle Johnson, people are using custom garage spaces for a variety of uses. Though it is a manufacturing business now, this garage can fit six vehicles inside.

And that’s just the lower level.

Upstairs is a fully finished space that currently acts as an office but could be converted into a mother-in-law apartment. The space features Berber carpet, has multiple ceiling fans operated by remote control, a complete bedroom with white oak wood flooring and wood trim and a programmable thermostat, and is prewired for TV, Internet and telephone.

“Many of these spaces are also becoming a place for man toys, such as flat-screen TVs and car lifts for the car collector enthusiast,” Johnson said. “Homebuyers are beginning to see that garages can be customized and cool. Finished walls and floors, heating and cooling system and full bathrooms are becoming standard in the custom garage industry.”

The custom-built home, which is now on the market, sits on 7.66 acres, and the property includes 6.66 acres of tax-deferred noble Christmas trees, which is another way of bringing business to the home.

The home includes four bedrooms, 3.5 baths and is 6,884 square feet. It is located 2.5 miles from Interstate 5, though it is nestled in the country with views of Mount Hood. The house has Brazilian cherry floors, a main level office and a gourmet kitchen, and the master bedroom features a fireplace and a built-in coffee bar. One of the bedrooms even has a secret playroom accessed through the closet. Outside is a covered patio area and a built-in barbecue island.
