Sports Editor

The News-Times and Hillsboro Tribune have an exciting opportunity for a full-time sports editor. The News-Times is an award-winning weekly covering schools Forest Grove, Banks and Gaston in western Washington County, as well as Pacific University. The Hillsboro Tribune is a weekly newspaper covering schools in Oregon’s fifth-largest city, as well as the Hillsboro Hops minor league baseball team. The sports editor coordinates sports coverage for both newspapers, their websites and social media.

In this role, you will primarily cover high school sports, take photos and coordinate the efforts of our part-time sports clerk and full-time photographer. You will be responsible for working with our design desk and for posting stories to our website and social media outlets.

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor's degree in journalism and at least one year of sports reporting experience, demonstrating excellent time management skills and an ability to write engaging, accurate sports stories that do not need substantial editing. Although you will work with a professional photographer, you must be able to shoot sports photos. You will use social media to share your work and engage our audience, work well on deadline, and demonstrate the ability to manage a flexible work schedule that includes evenings and weekends.

The Portland Tribune is looking for a full-time sportswriter to cover a variety of local sports for print and Web. Candidates must have strong reporting and interviewing skills, generate story ideas on an assortment of beats, be well-organized, take direction well and have a strong desire to provide in-depth, unique coverage to our readers. Candidates must be able to write news and game stories on deadline, and be creative in writing features and profiles.
