Off to be President of the World Affairs Council of Oregon.



Derrick Olsen is leaving Greater Portland Inc, the metro area's economic development agency.

Olsen is GPI’s Vice President of Regional Strategy where he leads the implementation of Greater Portland Global, the region’s Global Trade and Investment Plan. This was developed with the Portland Development Commission and other key partners as part of the Global Cities Initiative, a joint program of the Brookings Institution and JPMorgan Chase.

GPI is an economic development nonprofit that provides support and services to companies seeking to relocate or expand in Greater Portland, covering seven counties in Oregon and SW Washington.

GPI’s stated mission is to “grow our region’s economy by providing support and services to companies seeking to relocate or expand in Greater Portland, a region that spans two states and seven counties.”

For four years Olsen worked on GPI’s Greater Portland Export Plan and Greater Portland Global or the Global Trade and Investment Plan.

He has served as a Foreign Service Officer of the U.S. Department of State and managed international trade and investment issues for Business Oregon.

Olsen is leaving to become the new President of the World Affairs Council of Oregon starting March 1.

The mission of the non-profit World Affairs Council of Oregon is to broaden public awareness and understanding of international affairs and to engage Oregonians with the world. The Council is known for its International Speaker Series, which last has included Hillary Clinton. The next speaker is writer Thomas Friedman, 7pm Monday February 29, 2016.
