PMG PHOTO: STEPHANIE BASALYGA - The masononry brick building that served as the showroom of Schleifer Furniture for 80 years is being renovated back to its original use as a hotel.

UNDER RENOVATION

Project name: Hotel Chamberlain

Address: 509 S.E. Grand Avenue

Developers: Beam Development, Urban Development + Partners

Architect: Works Progress Architecture

Engineer: Humber Design Group

Builder: Siteworks Design/Build

A renovation of the four-story masonry building will restore the building to its original use as a hotel. Built in 1987, the building once housed the Chamberlain Hotel. While upstairs rooms were closed off in the 1970s, they remained intact. The building most recently housed the showroom of Shleifer Furniture, which closed in 2016 after 80 years at the location at the corner of Southeast Grand Avenue and Southeast Stark. The renovation project will restore 57 upper-level rooms and create ground-floor retail space. Interior systems will be updated while the historic character of the exterior will be restored.
