KEX Hotel and Hostel opened in November in the historic Vivian apartment building, which was empty for seven years. KEX is a hotel concept from Iceland that combines wood and fish chic with average hotel prices ($120-200 a night) and low backpacker hostel prices. Founder Kristinn Vilbergsson also opened a restaurant called Dottir (as in daughter) on the ground floor, activating a part of Couch Street that had been home to Stark's vacuum cleaner storage for much of this century.
