Rock rolled: Hyatt Regency Portland at the Oregon Convention Center finally open.
Hundreds turned out Thursday evening for a private party for the grand opening event for Portland's first convention center hotel, Hyatt Regency Portland at the Oregon Convention Center.
Former Metro president Tom Hughes did not make a speech, but his successor Lynn Peterson did, and thanked him for "rolling this rock uphill for years."
She thanked public and private funders and labor, and ended her speech with an expletive of relief that the thing was finally open after 30 years of wrangling.
The hotel offers 600 guestrooms, including 16 suites, in the Lloyd neighborhood, chandeliers adorned with bicycle chains. A slimmed down March Fourth marching band played a song and Portland painter Mike Bennet provided a scavenger hunt of pieces.
