There are eight other Macy's stories in Oregon, but the Lloyd Center location is the only one in Portland, and it will soon be closing.Macy's Lloyd Center will close on Jan. 18, 2021. Could this be the fatal blow for the mall?

The department store chain alerted state officials that 83 jobs would be lost.

Employers must notify the Oregon Dislocated Worker Unit of large layoffs, according to the WARN Act.

The store will stay open through the holiday season, but then it will join fugitives such as Nordstrom, who have given up on the once-great east side mall.

Macy's 2020 got off to a bad start when it said in February it would take three years to close 125 stores in the United States and Canada.

The COVID pandemic only accelerated the decline of department stores as many restricted the number of customers allowed in at one time, and customers found shopping online easier and safer.

The Meier & Frank building in downtown Portland was remodeled in 2007, and Macy's moved in. However, Macy's moved out again in April 2017.

Cypress Equities, based in Dallas, Texas, bought the mall for $148 million in 2013.

Despite new ownership and a makeover, Lloyd Center continues to lose tenants, and the mall has never had so many empty storefronts. Macy's has become a harbinger as its footprint has shrunk.

Macy's remaining stores in the Portland area are at the Vancouver Mall, Clackamas Town Center, the Washington Square Mall, and the Streets at Tanasbourne.
