Google is launching a pilot scheme in Portland for tracking grocery pick-ups from Fred Meyer. Shoppers will order online then as they head to the store, their location will be tracked on Google Maps. The plan would allow the story to fill more imminent orders first. Until now, stores have had trouble knowing when people would actually show up for their groceries, leading to a need for a second set of coolers and shelves in parking lots.

The Google Maps-Fred Meyer/Kroger plan launches Tuesday, June 22 at the Barbur, Tigard and NE 102nd Ave stores. Portland is the first city to get the pilot.

According to a news release, "When you place a Pickup order from a handful of Fred Meyer locations via their app, you'll be able to add your order to Google Maps. When it's time to leave, Google Maps will send you a notification and let you share your arrival time with the store. Your ETA will be continuously shared, helping the store prioritize your order so it's ready as soon as you get there. You do not need to call a Pickup associate, your wait times are shorter, and you're back on the road faster.

The first Fred Meyer stores participating in the pilot are:

Seven more store plus Beaverton and Happy Valley will be added on Tuesday, June 29. Kroger, Fred Meyer's national owner, will expand it if it is a success.

According to the release, "Demand for no-contact, curbside pickup exploded during the pandemic and continues to be popular, even as restrictions are lifted. In fact, stats from March of this year show people in the U.S. were using Google Maps to search for 'curbside pickup' nearly 9,000% more than they were a year prior."

Google Maps and Kroger expect people will continue this aspect of the pandemic behavior into the fall as families return to schools and offices in the fall.
