Amazon's planned Woodburn fulfillment center will serve retail customers throughout the general region

COURTESY PHOTO: CITY OF WOODBURN - Online retail giant Amazon purchased property in west Woodburn with plans to build a fulfillment center. The facility is anticipated to employ more than 1,500 full-time workers. On Wednesday, June 30, Amazon officially announced its plans to open a new fulfillment center at Woodland Avenue and Butteville Road NE in Woodburn.

The online retail giant purchased 130 acres in the Woodburn enterprise zone last week. Amazon officials said they envision opening the new center in 2023, and it will hire more than 1,500 full-time employees who will help pick, pack and ship orders to customers in the general region. The average starting wage is expected to be about $17 per hour with benefits.

Amazon currently employs roughly 13,000 people in the state of Oregon.

"We're excited to open a new, state-of-the-art fulfillment center in the city of Woodburn," Amazon's Vice President of Global Customer Fulfillment Alicia Boler Davis said. "Woodburn and surrounding communities in Marion County offer a talented workforce, and we look forward to growing employment beyond the more than 13,000 employees already serving customers in the region."

The west-Woodburn land for the proposed fulfillment center is near the WinCo Foods Distribution Center. Amazon has submitted preliminary documents announcing plans to construct a 3.84 million-square-foot fulfillment center on 90 acres of the land. Woodburn spokesman Tommy Moore said the city anticipates a completed application for that plan in the coming weeks.

"(Details) likely to be requested will be considered by the Planning Commission at a yet to be scheduled public hearing," Moore said.

"Woodburn has been planning for significant residential and industrial development projects that will enhance the community for many years," Woodburn City Administrator Scott Derickson said. "We are excited to see that investments the city has made in expanding the urban growth boundary, completing transportation system improvements and expanding access to affordable housing are now beginning to attract the private sector capital necessary to develop projects that provide economic stability and significant employment opportunities for Woodburn residents."

Amazon officials said employees at the center will play an integral role in fulfilling customer items such as household goods, books, toys, and technology.

"This is great news for Amazon and for Marion County," Marion County Commissioner Kevin Cameron said. "As we look toward rebuilding our economy from the COVID-19 pandemic, Amazon's decision to bring this significant operation to Woodburn will be a boost for our community, workers, and businesses.

"We look forward to working with Amazon as they expand in business-friendly Marion County."

Amazon spokeswoman Karen Riley Sawyer noted that a job at Amazon can be a springboard to an Amazon career or other opportunities. In 2020, Amazon promoted more than 35,000 employees in its operations network and continues to invest in the long-term career success of employees inside and outside of the company.

"Early 2023, we will begin hiring for a wide range of roles, everything from receiving and stowing inventory to shipping customer orders and supporting network logistics," Boler Davis added. "Amazon offers opportunities for professional development and encourages current employees as well as interested candidates to consider building a longer-term career with us."

Amazon officials noted that the company's comprehensive benefits include full medical, vision, and dental insurance as well as a 401(k) plan with a 50-percent match. Benefits start on day one.

Amazon also offers up to 20 weeks of maternal and parental paid leave and innovative benefits such as "Leave Share" and "Ramp Back," intended to give new parents flexibility to support their families.

While the company is not yet hiring for the new Woodburn location, Amazon continues to hire new full and part-time associates in Oregon.
