Lam Research to open Sherwood facility
Lam Research, one of the largest suppliers of semiconductor manufacturing equipment in the world, has announced plans to open a new Sherwood facility this December.
The 45,000-square-foot facility, which is expected to create an estimated 300 new jobs, is located in the new Cipole Industrial Park on the north side of Southwest Tualatin-Sherwood Road, between Cipole Road and Wildrose Place. Sherwood's Cipole Road Industrial Park, built by Phelan Development out of California, sits on 12 acres.
The Sherwood facility "will supply chipmakers with the critical tools needed to build chips that power advanced electronic devices," according to a news release from Lam Research.
"We are building the manufacturing workforce of the future — from our comprehensive training program and next-generation manufacturing techniques to our agile and collaborative work environment," Tim Archer, president, and chief executive officer of Lam Research, stated.
Lam Research currently has 4,000 workers in Oregon.
In neighboring Tualatin, Lam Research operates a 600,000-square-foot facility spread across 50 acres — its largest campus in the Beaver State. During the last 18 months, that facility added 1,000 new workers, according to a Lam Research spokesperson.
"We are excited to work with Lam Research as they expand into our city," Sherwood Mayor Keith Mays said in a statement. "Having a leading semiconductor manufacturing equipment company in Sherwood will create new high-quality jobs and bring significant economic impact to our community."
Plans are to attract local residents as well as veterans and high school and college graduates for job positions at the new site. Lam Research also plans to broaden its pool of trained workers through an internship program with the microelectronics technology program at Portland Community College.
Those new workers, which will include assemblers, test technicians, engineering technicians and material handlers, will be trained at the Tualatin site until the new manufacturing building opens.
"This is exciting for us to welcome this Silicon Valley-based tech company to Sherwood," said Bruce Coleman, Sherwood's economic development director. "This announcement by Lam Research is highly supportive of the city's economic development goal of proactively encouraging the growth of technology companies in Sherwood."
When it opens, Lam Research's Sherwood campus will become its fifth manufacturing site in the United States.
Lam Research is headquartered in Fremont, California.
