Erickson is one of only a few aircraft operators in the world that is also an original equipment manufacturer (OEM).

The company engineers heavy-duty helicopters and operating aircrafts for civilians and for the military, and has been in business since 1971 when its heavy lifter machines were first used in the timber industry. Erickson manufactures the heavy-lift S-64 Air Crane helicopter, originally designed during the Vietnam War, and still continually upgrades and updates it. Erickson has a fleet of more than 70 aircrafts operating around the world.

According to the company, many employees are long-term who have been with the company for more than 30 years, and almost 25% of Erickson's employees are military veterans.

Steve Reavis, commercial sales manager, has been with Erickson since May 1989 — over 32 years.COURTESY: ERICKSON - Bubba the Air Crane, piloted by Ralph Sembach and crew, work on the Statue of Freedom project in 1993.

"It is a critical time in the industry and for us as a special niche organization. Our organization is unique in what it does; people want us to be a global aircraft OEM," Reavis said in a statement. "(In the future) best case scenario, (our) OEM is the best in re-updating the equipment, rotor blades, new engines (and) bringing the aircraft to the current state in the industry."

Looking forward for Erickson, other representatives said working toward a more fuel-efficient engine will be a big step into keeping their products competitive in the market. They said Erickson hopes to strengthen its position in the heavy-lift industry, and the company has plans for an S-64 Matrix Technology, which will be key for this strategy.
