PGE renewable energy program ranks No. 1 in nation
Portland General Electric has the best renewable energy program in the United States.
For the 13th year, PGE has been ranked No. 1 by the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Lab, for having the largest participation of business and residential customers for its renewable energy program — larger than any other electric utility in the U.S.
PGE also was ranked No. 1 for the most megawatt hours of renewable energy sold, totaling more than 2 million megawatt hours in 2021.
"Our customers are deeply committed to accelerating the transition to a clean energy future," said Maria Pope, PGE president and CEO. "More than a quarter of PGE's business and residential customers choose renewable power, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, investing in innovative clean energy solutions and strengthening our state's economy."
PGE's Green Future program has been operating for 23 years, and now has more than 225,000 commercial and residential customers voluntarily enrolled in the renewable program.
Through the program, energy customers choose renewable sources supporting clean energy. The program also funds more renewable energy projects through PGE's Renewable Development Fund.
The fund gives grants for clean energy projects like solar panel installations, like the ones at Headwaters Farm and Chemeketa Community College. The fund already has awarded more than $16 million to 75 projects and has brought online over 16.6 megawatts of renewable generation, according to the utility.
