Forest service accepting applications for seasonal positions, assignments for summer 2023 until Oct. 6

COURTESY PHOTO: U.S. FOREST SERVICE - There are several types of positions open for seasonal work in the Mt. Hood National Forest during the summer. Though many are now thinking about fall, the forest service team at Mt. Hood National Forest is already recruiting for their summer 2023 crew.

Now through Thursday, Oct. 6, people are encouraged to apply for positions on a variety of temporary crews and assignments, including:

  • Recreation crews, which provide support for developed recreation sites, cleaning facilities, mowing, collecting fees, and small maintenance projects
  • Wilderness rangers, who spend shifts hiking and monitoring trails, sharing safety and forest info with visitors, and collecting data
  • Trails crews, whose responsibilities are clearing, building, and maintaining trails
  • OHV trails crews, who clear and maintain trails, patrol riding areas and educate the public on regulations and resource protection
  • Wildland firefighters, who work on a hand crew or fire engine and share fire prevention messages
  • Aquatics and fisheries field work, which involves measuring stream quality, surveying fish populations, implementing and monitoring fish habitat restoration projects
  • Plants monitoring and invasive plant control, which involves surveying sensitive or invasive plant species, removing invasive species for forest health and data collection
  • Forestry, which involves surveying, forest health improvement and preparation for timber sales
  • Civil engineering support in Sandy
  • Maintenance work in Parkdale
  • Available positions provide support at Sandy, Zigzag, Dufur and Parkdale forest ranger stations.     Besides these numerous seasonal positions, the forest service is also hiring permanent firefighters to work across the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. This hiring process is open until Tuesday, Oct. 11. For more information on these year-round positions, visit tinyurl.com/2m9zmmxs.

    According to a statement from the forest service, "It is important for applicants to apply to any duty location and position they're interested in. Check the interactive map for positions that may be filled during Fire Hire. If a position becomes vacant during the Fire Hire, that position may be immediately backfilled. Apply for jobs listed as 'Filled,' just in case they become vacant this fall."
