Is CBD marijuana?
There is a certain CBD renaissance happening; CBD infused everything, from drinks to tinctures to face creams and beers. But what is CBD really?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is just one of over 100 active compounds found in the cannabis plant. Another active ingredient is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) but they are very different. THC has many colloquial names including marijuana, horse, weed, grass, Mary Jane and pot. And it's the one that gets you 'high' from its psychoactive properties. Hemp, cannabis and marijuana are all the same plant species.
Here's the great thing. Cannabis can be bred to have low THC levels and we can now extract CBD from the cannabis plant without noticeable THC (to classify as CBD, it must contain no more than .3% THC). So, the healing properties of CBD can be enjoyed without the THC. CBD is non-psychoactive. It's like an egg-white omelet: leave the part you don't want.
CBD oil is a natural anti-inflammatory and CBD-infused topicals are used to treat muscle and joint pain and some skin conditions like eczema, rosacea and psoriasis have seen results and soothing relief from CBD. Acne-prone skin has also benefited from CBD by calming redness, reducing breakouts and decreasing excessive oil.
So, does it work? Is CBD just the latest trend? Research tells us it works for muscle and joint pain and alleviating and improving skin conditions as well as calming anxiety. The cannabis plant has been around for thousands of years with documented medicinal properties, but it has only been recently that scientists could isolate CBD.
