Here at Creekside Village, the residents are fortunate to have close friends just down the hallway. One recent afternoon I happily stopped to talk with a few ladies, and I noticed they were both headed out to the patio for their weekly "cocktail hour." They were two of a special group of friends that meet a few afternoons per week, and they have enjoyed this tradition for many years.
Dee recounted that soon after she moved to Creekside, one of the residents, who at the time had terminal cancer, asked her and some other friends "to have a drink for her every Friday". I learned how this seemingly small gesture has made a regular afternoon extra special. I think having a tradition and routine to meet others and share a laugh, a frustration, or a memory is what living in this wonderful community is all about.
And cocktails aren't necessary! It's all about the friendship and sense of togetherness. There are many ways to connect here, while staying six feet apart and wearing our masks. We are all trying to "smile with our eyes" and every day it gets a bit easier. Our dining room looks a little different with fewer people seated at each table. We are open for breakfast and dinner and there are exercise classes, musical guests, bingo, and Silly Saturdays. The goal is to maintain the sense of fun and community while at the same time following the new rules.
