Hey seniors, keep tickling that funny bone
A global pandemic, a contentious presidential election and devastating wildland fires all walk into a bar….. If ever there was a year to NOT lose your sense of humor, it's 2020!
Keeping a sense of humor is important, especially as we age. Studies have shown physical benefits to laughing including improved ability to learning and increased short-term memory when humor is incorporated in positive rehabilitative applications. Think of it as exercise for the brain. Plus, humor makes us feel good by relieving stress: muscles relax, blood pressure lowers, cholesterol levels drop, T-cells and oxygen levels increase in the body with a good belly laugh, it even stimulates the immune system. Imagine, all the benefits of laughter without having to take a pill.
It's easy to become mired in doom. All the "what if" scenarios can be overwhelming to ponder. We suggest, turning off the news and engaging in good ol' fashion laughter. Find a book written by a witty author, or search for a new comedy TV series, or even call your grandchild armed with a list of bad jokes. It's easy to find humor when you're looking for it.
At Beaverton Lodge, we find ways to make the lives of our seniors fun and meaningful. Our activities director carefully organizes events to educate, entertain, and exercise our community while providing opportunities to socialize. Sure, it's challenging with coronavirus protocols, but safely our seniors are finding ways to share their fun and lightheartedness with each other. Call today to schedule a tour and let us show you how we smile.
