Elf on a Shelf, internet shopping, Black Friday madness and gift cards. We live in a modern world with modern conveniences for Christmas, but we're feeling a bit nostalgic at Beaverton Lodge and thought we'd take a stroll down memory lane.
Our residents at Beaverton Lodge remember simpler times when the world wasn't so fast, or electronic. Like now, Christmas was a time to spend with family, make memories and celebrate the holy holiday. There were special yule logs to burn in the fireplace while the family sat on the davenport watching "It's a Wonderful Life," listening to a radio program or reading the classic poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas." Many families played games or put together puzzles on Christmas Eve and midnight mass was often attended. There were also Christmas carolers singing favorite holiday songs and spreading cheer throughout the towns. Christmas trees were decorated with tinsel and strung with popcorn garlands while handmade stockings were filled with oranges and nuts. Christmas was memorable if you were caught under the mistletoe with someone you fancied, and a sweet kiss could follow, or snow angels were made if your Christmas was white and don't forget the hours building a snowman or the fun of a snowball fight.
Times change, but the love we share for one another does not. So whether you're eating a traditional ham dinner or lutefisk on Christmas Day or ordering a pizza, it's what's in your heart that matters most and the memories of love you make with the people you adore.
From all of us at Beaverton Lodge, we wish you a very happy holiday season and a wonderful new year.
