At MorningStar of Beaverton, it is our pleasure to elevate life for our residents every day. And what lives they are! We are humbled and delighted to know these fine people and learn from their fascinating stories and amassed wisdom.

Meet Marguerite Batson, born in October 1919. The WWI armistice was signed just one year earlier, yet the world at the time of her arrival was still ensnared in the Spanish Flu pandemic which would take 50 million lives before it receded in virulence.

Marguerite was raised in St. Cloud, MN where she trained as a legal secretary just out of high school. She loved her first professional job. And the attorneys loved her energy and work ethic, often asking her to babysit their children in the evenings. "It was a good life being a legal secretary," she says, "But if I had to do it over again, I'd have taken more courses to prepare. At the time it was the best launch I could give myself, starting at the bottom."

With the onset of health issues, Marguerite decided to head for warmer climates, landing in Newport Beach, CA. She chuckles in remembrance, "But the senior attorneys in Minnesota kept sending telegrams, asking me to come back to the firm."

Marguerite would officially leave the work world in 1950 to marry Hobart John Baston and raise their two sons, one of whom died young from measles. Her beloved husband passed away in 1994, giving her reason in 2006 to move to Portland where her grown son, Lee Michael Baston, had settled.

With 102 years of perspective on societal progress, she is most impressed by commercial air travel. Marguerite will proudly report that she's never eaten fast food (no, not one stop at McDonald's). But she does enjoy a glass of beer with a raw egg in it.

One of the first residents to move into MorningStar of Beaverton four years ago, Marguerite loves that she doesn't have to cook anymore and thoroughly enjoys all the companionship. She teasingly calls the MorningStar care team "the children." But it would appear that just as much, they are her friends. "They even stop in on their day off to visit with me in my apartment." Likely their "Momma" is teaching them the secrets of Bridge or how to crochet. Stay sweet and feisty, Marguerite!

At MorningStar, residents are family. We revel in listening to, learning from and sharing out resident stories. Stop by today for a tour and learn how Marguerite and others are making their golden years shine bright at MorningStar.
