Church foundation helps organizations provide food, housing, health care and community development.

The Southminster Presbyterian Church Foundation has awarded $10,000 to eight nonprofit organizations that serve some of the most vulnerable residents in communities west of Portland.

Recipients of these recent grants (and amount received) are:

Bethel Congregational UCC Mission & Outreach ($500) – provide food during winter break to Beaverton High School homeless students.

Care to Share ($1,500) – upgrade their phone system following recent relocation at a local food pantry.

Daytime Enrichment Activities & Recreation (DEAR) ($1,500) – provide monitors for video production and to display community events for the developmentally disabled.

Good Neighbor Center, Tigard ($1,000) — Supplement fund for assistance to families entering their Housing Stabilization Program and increase emergency rent/utility assistance for families already in the program.

Sonrise Church’s Homeless Connect Program ($2,000) – provide dental care, Tri-Met tickets and food for clients at the shelter.

Special Church/Community Action Team (SCAT) ($1,000) – help purchase basic food items that are rarely donated in food drives and are often unavailable at the Oregon Food Bank, operating from the St. Matthew Lutheran Church.

United Church of Christ Forest Grove Overnight Shelter ($2,000) – purchase sleeping mats and other necessities to serve adults and children during the coldest months.

Washington County Veterans Assistance Fund ($500) – support employment activities for veterans needing assistance, operating from the Aloha VFW.

The Southminster Presbyterian Church Foundation’s priorities are supporting nonprofit organizations that serve western Portland Metro communities with housing, food, health care and community development services.

The Foundation has awarded more than $400,000 since 1980.

Applications for the next round of funding are due in February.

Southminster Presbyterian Church also will host a community fair on Oct. 9 that will feature nonprofit organizations serving the region. Community members can find out how to help meet needs in the community through financial contributions and volunteer service.
