Man who sexually assaulted seniors sentenced
A former nursing assistant at Providence St. Vincent's Medical Center, AdeladiIew Mekonen, was sentenced on Wednesday morning to the maximum time of 25 years for sexually assaulting several patients, according to KOIN TV.
After Mekonen serves the 25-year sentence, he will be kept under supervision to prevent him from coming into contact with people older than 65 and other adults who are considered vulnerable. Mekonen oldest victim of sexual assault was 94.
He pleaded guilty to the charges on Friday, but attempted to change his plea on Wednesday morning saying he did not fully understand his plea deal. Judge Beth Roberts rejected his argument and the sentencing went forward.
Several letters from his victims and family members of his victims about the pain he caused them were read to Mekonen.
Mekonen committed 28 sex crimes against a dozen women. He was arrested in 2016, shortly after he was hired at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center. Mekonen had seven victims under his care at the time of his arrest.
