Newspaper staff's annual magazine takes a look at the people who make our communities unique.

PHOTO BY JAIME VALDEZ - Sandra Amolo brings the experiences of two continents and her volunteer efforts throughout the United States to her work with Tualatin Riverkeepers. For 2017, the staff of The Times and Beaverton Valley Times took a look at heroes in our communities.

Some seem obvious: Police officers and firefighters.

Others, less so. There's a popular Tualatin librarian who has created a cool space for kids. There's an athletic director. We introduce readers to more than one create volunteer, and more than one family that has overcome long odds. There's an actress who sent from Tigard High School to starring in two television sitcoms — and serving as executive producer of one. There are doctors trying new innovations and a baker that provides second chances for former felons.
