Evangelist Luis Palau draws on 'warm thoughts and prayers' to battle lung cancer
Evangelist Luis Palau of Beaverton has been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, according to his son Kevin Palau, president and chief executive officer of the Luis Palau Association.
Luis Palau has preached around the world for more than six decades. He was born in Argentina in 1934 and moved to Oregon in his mid-20s to enroll in a graduate program in Biblical studies.
He is known for having a close relationship with evangelist Billy Graham, and has often been referred to as "the Billy Graham of Latin America." His ministry employs 70 people at its headquarters in Beaverton, and another 25 around the world, which includes offices in Buenos Aires and London.
"We've received so many warm thoughts and prayers from so many people," Kevin Palau said. "We put up a 10-minute video about eight days ago, and it's been seen by millions."
The video is online at palau.org.
Luis Palau's other son, Andrew, had been serving as co-evangelist with his father. He will continue to preach around the world, as Luis Palau begins chemotherapy.
"Dad's not traveling at all, but from what the oncologist told us, we're hopeful he can be well enough to go to Bogota this summer," Kevin Palau said.Luis Palau first evangelized in Bogota, Colombia, in 1966. It was one of his first major international events. Luis and Andrew Palau had intended to return in August 2018.
"That's his real prayer," Kevin Palau said. "He'd like to have enough strength to preach in Colombia again."
