Tualatin, Westview take top honors at state cheerleading champsionships in Portland.

PAMPLIN MEDIA GROUP?: DIEGO G. DIAZ - Tualatin High School grabbed the top honors Saturday in the state cheerleading competition for large co-ed programs.Cheerleading teams from Tualatin and Westview high schools took home the trophies Saturday, Feb. 10, at the 2018 State Championship.

The Timberwolves grabbed the No. 1 position in the Large Coed Division. The Wildcats also came in first in the 6A Division.

Tualatin Cheer beat Thurston High School, at second place, followed by Lebanon, McMinnville, North Medford, Umatilla, Yamhill-Carlton, South Medford and Marshfield high schools, according to Patricia Mack, varsity assistant coach at Tualatin.

The T'Wolves are led by Senior Captains Deyja Whitmire, Joseline Arana and Derek Pinto. Other team members include seniors Maddie Stacklie, Maya Cardenas, Sarah Hill, Sierra Jones, Hector Aragon, Spencer Reynolds and Alondra Valle; juniors Jackson Metler and Holly Howe; sophomores Michael Dawson, Josh Lakeman, Karina Portscheller, Mia Webb and Jaycee Cogswell; and freshmen Corinne Gray, Brendyn Riddle and Anna Giroux.

The coaches are Krista Reynolds, head coach; Chayla Evetts, assistant coach; and Mack.

"Jackson Metler was injured earlier in the season and was unable to compete with us but is on the team," Mack said. "Derek Pinto was injured two weeks ago; the team had to redo many parts of the routine as he was a huge part of our (program)." PAMPLIN MEDIA GROUP PHOTO: DIEGO G. Meanwhile, Westview High School took home top honors in the 6A division, beating Lake Oswego, Lakeridge, Liberty and Clackamas high schools.

Head Coach Melissa Hoekert said the Wildcat squad includes Emma Altig, Kendall Beranek, Olivia Beranek, Sam Casani, Colby Fischer, Kaila Gallion, Aaliyah Garcia, Harley Hicks, Hailey Jones, Sammy Kadera, Amanda LeFore, McKenzie Martin, Melanie Murray, Karmen Neliton, Krista Pham, Maria Prestidge, Kinsley Rhodes, Jacki Sanchez, Nokfaii Schuetz, Danielle Shook, Caelan Stein, Ella Tanuvasa, Hailey Watkins and Kaileen Wolfe.

"I am so proud of this incredible group of athletes," Hoekert said. "They overcame many obstacles along the way, but came together as a team and had their best performance of the year at State. ... It was quite the finale!"

This is Westview Cheer's eighth state title, Hoekert said. "We as coaches are grateful to get to work with such amazing athletes, who are willing to make the sacrifices necessary to compete at this level."

Locally, Sherwood High School came in fifth in the Coed Small Division.
