Beaverton High assistant principal named new Sherwood High School principal
A Beaverton High School assistant principal has been named as the new Sherwood High School principal effective July 1.
Melissa Baran was named to the position after a thorough hiring process that involved the feedback of staff, students, and parents, according to a news release from the Sherwood School District.
"We feel very fortunate for someone with Ms. Baran's administrative and teaching experience to become the next Principal of Sherwood High School," said Sherwood Superintendent Heather Cordie. "During the interview process, she demonstrated many of the qualities our team was looking for in our next principal, as well as several of the characteristics identified in the feedback we received from staff, students, and parents during the hiring process."
Baran's background in high school education includes several years teaching language arts and serving as activities director at Beaverton High School, prior to becoming assistant principal at Parkrose High School in Northeast Portland in 2012.
In 2014, she returned to Beaverton High School as assistant principal.
Her educational experience also includes work with AVID, or Advancement Via Individual Determination, which seeks to close the achievement gap by preparing students for college and postsecondary opportunities. She also worked with students in restorative justice practices and building community partnerships.
During the hiring process, a district spokesperson said Baran consistently demonstrated the priority she places on building relationships and addressing equity challenges, which are two key elements of the Sherwood School District's Strategic Plan.
"I am thankful to the many individuals who participated in feedback surveys, listening circles and candidate interviews, as it helped our team select a strong candidate that we believe is the right fit for Sherwood High School," said Cordie.
Baran said she was pleased to be joining the district.
"Words can not accurately capture my excitement about being selected as the next principal of Sherwood High School!" she said. "I eagerly look forward to serving the students, staff and community of Sherwood and am thankful for the many opportunities to come. There is amazing work happening in the Sherwood School District and at Sherwood High School -- I'm humbled to join such a strong team."
