In wake of three mass shootings in recent weeks, supporters of measures to curb gun violence will rally at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7.

PMG FILE PHOTO - A 2018 rally on illegal gun violence drew thousands to downtown Portland. A rally in support of guns safety is planned for 5 to 6 p.m. today, Wednesday, Aug. 7, across from the Beaverton Library at Southwest Fifth and Hall.

The event is sponsored by Indivisible Cedar Mill and Indivisible Beaverton.

"We felt it important to hold an event on the west side for residents to speak out and voice their anger, frustration and fears about what has occurred in our country over the past few days with 31 deaths and over 100 injuries in three mass shootings," organizers wrote in a press release. "We will be emphasizing what people can do. This is an informal gathering, with possibly one or two speakers. We will hold signs, and we will gather to plan actions to encourage our representatives to act now."

Solutions to be discussed include universal background checks before gun purchases; the end to all loopholes for checks; a ban on assault weapons; and funding for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to conduct research on gun violence.
