Brad Avakian of Beaverton, former state labor commissioner and legislator, is the new president of the Washington County Public Affairs Forum.
Avakian succeeds Rob Solomon, who had been forum president since January 2015. Solomon is a former chairman of the Beaverton Human Rights Commission and a 2012 candidate for City Council.
Avakian, 58, is a lawyer who was elected to the Oregon House in 2002 and the Oregon Senate in 2006. He was appointed commissioner of the Bureau of Labor and Industries in April 2008 and was elected statewide three times. He did not seek re-election in 2018.
Other officers for 2019-20 are Hector Hinojosa, first vice president; Megan Rutherford, second vice president; Phil Nelson, secretary; Matt Brink, treasurer, and three directors. They are Alfredo Moreno, term ending in 2020; Paula McCracken, 2021, and Brian Bishop, 2022.
The forum was created in 1956. It sponsors programs, usually on Mondays from September through June, and election forums. It is nonpartisan and promotes public discussion and civic engagement.
