Beaverton School District employee dies after fall from scissor lift
A Beaverton School District employee died Wednesday afternoon at Westview High School.
Jerry Syverson, an employee with BSD for the past four years, reportedly fell from a piece of equipment while working at the Washington County school Aug. 14, and died from his injuries.
School district officials said Syverson was working on a scissor lift while painting in a courtyard at the Westview High campus. Other maintenance team member were working on campus, but not in the immediate vicinity of Syverson at the time, Kara Yunk, BSD communications coordinator, confirmed Thursday. Syverson's age was not released by the district, citing privacy concerns.
A letter to school district staff from Superintendent Don Grotting indicates Syverson was part of a maintenance team. "It is with great sadness that I share with you the loss of a valued member of our team on Wednesday afternoon," Grotting wrote. "Our human resources department and others have reached out to the family and are supporting them in this time of loss. In his position, Jerry touched many employees in schools."
Counselors were offered to school district employees seeking emotional support.
The Washington County Sheriff's Office, the school district and Oregon's Occupational Safety & Health Administration are investigating the incident.
