Castillo, pictured in an official photograph from the Obama administration, will be speaking at the Patricia Reser Center for the Arts in Beaverton about economic issues.Centro Cultural de Washington County's annual Economic Symposium this year will feature a visit from a leading official in the Biden administration.

Alejandra Y. Castillo, who serves as U.S. assistant secretary of commerce for economic development, is the keynote speaker for the symposium.

The fundraising event will help the Cornelius-based nonprofit raise money for its annual events and operations. But it's also a chance to celebrate the economic growth that the Oregon's Latino population has brought to Washington County, and to discuss the issues that affect the community.

Centro officials say they are especially excited about having Castillo at the event because she can speak to what's being done at the federal level to address issues important to the people Centro serves.

"We couldn't be more honored and proud to have Assistant Secretary Castillo coming to Oregon and joining this event," said Centro's executive director, Maria Rubio, in a statement. "She has such rich expertise, and a national perspective on the future of our economy. We can't wait to hear from her alongside our community in Washington County."

Sworn into her current role in President Joe Biden's administration on Aug. 13, 2021, Castillo has held leadership positions under three presidents, including Barack Obama and Bill Clinton.

Centro is celebrating 50 years of operation this year, so the symposium will also act as the latest celebration of the organization's legacy.

The event is at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, at the Patricia Reser Center for the Arts, located at 12625 S.W. Crescent St. in Beaverton. Tickets are available at Centro's website.
