Rival high schools team up to feed needy during Thanksgiving
Jesuit High School and Lincoln High School on Portland's west side are typically rivals, but this weekend, they're partnering to help feed the city's unhoused and food insecure this Thanksgiving.
The two schools are partnering with the Youth Charity League to collect donated holiday desserts. The YCL is asking for donations of pumpkin or other pies, either store-bought or homemade, that will be distributed to more than two dozen local nonprofit and charitable organizations that provide meals to the homeless. YCL was started in 2017 by parents who wanted family-friendly volunteer opportunities for all ages. The group partners with local nonprofits and community service agencies.
This marks the third year of the pie drive. The initiative was started by Oregon Culinary Institute Chef Daniel Brophy in 2008. Brophy was later killed by his wife in 2018.
According to organizers, Lincoln High School culinary arts students teamed up with the YCL in 2020 and the two groups have since collected and donated 2,000 pies. This year, Jesuit High near Beaverton will help strengthen the impact, collecting donated pies with a festive drive-through site at the campus. Each rival high school hopes to top the other by collecting the most pies.
"Pumpkin pie is such a source of comfort we want all our neighbors to have a filling side dish," Kate Begonia, co-founder and board president of the YCL, said in an event announcement. "We are grateful to (Lincoln High's) culinary team and Jesuit High School for helping us grow this tradition to meet a need that is so high this year. We've already received requests for over 1,000 pies!"
The list of charitable organizations set to receive donated pies includes: Blanchet House; City Team; Clay Street Table; Do Good Multnomah; Feed the Mass; First Baptist Church; Friends of Seasonal and Service Workers; Homeplate Youth Services; Hurtado Center; JOIN; Our Giving Table; Ronald McDonald House; Stone Soup and Transition Projects.
