COVID-19 sidelines annual Tigard Festival of Balloons
What would have been Tigard's 36th Festival of Balloons has been canceled this year.
"Due to COVID-19 and its impact on the health and welfare of our community, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the Tigard Festival of Balloons scheduled for June 26 through 28," Cindy Murphy, executive director of the event, wrote in an email Wednesday. "We hope to continue our charitable mission as soon as we can do so in a manner that is safe for the members of the community and the hundreds of volunteers that produce the event."
The annual event, which has only been canceled only once before in its history, attracts up to 20 hot air balloons to Cook Park along with more than a dozen food vendors and 100 craft booths. Hundreds of volunteers help with the event as well. Last year's event raised more $50,000, benefitting such groups as Tigard Rotary clubs, Foundation for Tigard-Tualatin School, the American Cancer Society and many more.
The festival also includes the popular Night Glow event where tethered balloons are illuminated against the night sky.
The event is expected to return next June.
