Cat rescue organization will host holiday event
As its final socially distanced get-together of the year, Hazel's House Cat Rescue will host a holiday event Dec. 12 for cat lovers from around the Chehalem Valley.
From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Fernwood Grange on Springbrook Road in Newberg, Hazel's House will be selling gear to fund its rescue efforts and hosting a number of vendors. Some friendly cats and kittens will be in attendance to be cuddled, too.
"We've been testing the waters with fundraisers — we started with a T-shirt sale and that worked out great," Brittany Hazel said. "We did that for the second time at the beginning of October, which raised a little over $600. It allowed people to meet some of the kittens that were coming up for adoption and learn more about what we do."
Hazel's House currently has 13 foster families in the Newberg, Gaston and Forest Grove areas, where they seek out stray cats and kittens to house, socialize and eventually find a good home. It has been a years-long effort.
"We started three years ago and, originally, we started off with just a handful of barn cats that needed help getting socialized and needed a home," Hazel said. "We were always big animal lovers, but then we realized we had the capability to do this at a larger scale. The ball started rolling and we started taking in many more cats [we] found.
"We help out the Gaston, Forest Grove and Newberg areas just because there's not a whole lot of help out there. We see a lot of help needed especially in Forest Grove and Gaston. We take in kittens, moms that are pregnant, adult stray cats, any that might need our help."
While the holiday event isn't technically an adoption event, interested parties can learn more about Hazel's House and meet kittens that will potentially be up for adoption in the future. Masks are mandatory for all attendees, along with social distancing in the large space. Hand sanitizer will be readily available.
"Given the success we had raising awareness in October, we are going to do one last event before the end of the year," Hazel said. "We rented out the Fernwood Grange in Newberg and we will bring approved cats and kittens along for cuddles with vendors of pet products and services there as well."
