MorningStar: Our Residents are Our Pride
At MorningStar of Beaverton, our residents are our pride! Each day we take the time to listen to our seniors and care for them both physically and emotionally. We would like to share our story of resident Don Carlson who has been with us since our opening.
Don Carlson was born and raised in Portland, graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1948. Following high school, Don attended the University of Portland. Tensions in Korea were ramping up at the time and Don felt the draft looming. After a stint working in the mailroom for the Federal Reserve, Don was drafted in 1952 into the Army where he spent two years in the Signal Corps stationed in Trieste, Italy.
"I was fortunate to be stationed in Trieste Free Territory, as it was," he explained. "It was like Berlin, spit and polished; not too many people knew about Trieste. I did my duty there and received leave time and traveled all of Europe. I had a Mediterranean cruise getting to Italy and it stopped at many ports. It was an interesting duty and served me well as it continued my education."
Upon fulfilling his military obligation, Don returned to Oregon where he worked in the financial industry for 40 years. Working for several banks, towards the end of his career, Don was responsible for managing seven bank mergers in the 70s and 80s. He worked two years with a CPA firm compiling analysis of nursing homes and hospitals. Upon leaving the bank industry, Don served as the Multnomah County court debt collector where he developed a program to track and trace people owing money to Multnomah County.
" I could usually find whoever we were looking for," Don said. "If things got tough, I was able to have the Oregon Internal Revenue Service finish things off. In the three years it took me to establish the program and following my time there, we went from zero collections to two million dollars biennial."
During this time, Don married Daon in 1956 and together they had two children. Daon was interested in the antique industry and built a business collecting and restoring antiques. When he retired, Don helped Daon refinish antiques and together they traveled with the proceeds, enjoying their retirement, especially on cruises.
Daon developed Parkinson's and Don decided they would be better served living in a retirement community. They lived in an assisted living community for three years in Vancouver, but their children wanted them closer, so they found a care home in Beaverton.
"We were there for only two months and I was evicted," Don laughs. "I was too critical of their inability to take care of my wife. We went to another care home for a couple of years. After 63 years of marriage to my wonderful lady, she passed in 2018, but when MorningStar was being built, my children noticed it. I came down and looked it over and found it architecturally designed for care of older people. I looked at the sizable lobby, bistro, activity, art room, gym and the rooms were spacious. I decided it was the place for me."
Don is an original member of MorningStar Founder's Club since he was one of our first residents. Today, Don enjoys his time at MorningStar especially because he is a painter and is inspired by the lush grounds on site. He also uses the art room to create his acrylic masterpieces and currently, over 12 of his paintings are on display, including a series of lighthouses and landscapes of his travels. Don's two children, three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren visit him at MorningStar.
"I've enjoyed the art room, it's an escape for me. I've been here for over two years, and I really like MorningStar. I still feel that it's home," he said.
