As promised in last month's column about NightLase we will explain the science behind this non-surgical laser treatment for snoring.

NightLase is a fast, patient friendly non-invasive treatment for snoring. NightLase is not laser surgery as no tissue is removed. NightLase was developed in Europe and used there safely and effectively for years, and it is now available in the U.S.

NightLase is a 20 minute procedure that treats snoring by strengthening the collagen tissues in the soft palate. The heat from the laser tightens the collagen in the oral mucosa tissue and strengthens it. The tightening of the throat tissues helps to open up the airway at the back of the throat and minimize snoring.

There is no need for anesthesia. Three to four non-surgical laser snoring treatments are required with three weeks between each appointment to provide time for the collagen to reform and new collagen to be produced inside the soft palatal tissue and the uvula.

According to a pilot study, NightLase patients reported an improvement in their sleep in general as well as their snoring. Also, no adverse effects were noticed after the treatment, which was well tolerated and almost painless. The results last for a long time, but if patients or their sleep partners notice increased snoring,

another treatment can be performed.

Dentists like Dr. Neal are in a great position to help screen patients for Nightlase treatment. If you are having difficulty with snoring see Dr. Neal at Neal Family Dental today.
