A pair of Lee Elementary School custodians are honored for their hard work and dedication

Each month, Canby Kiwanis and Canby School District honor staff members with the Canby Area Recognition of Excellence Award. This month, they handed out two awards to Lee Elementary custodians Andy Waldon and Dong Lam.

"It is always a pleasure…when I go into a school," Superintendent Trip Goodall said at the March school board meeting. "This time—they never know when we're coming to give an award—we walked into the gymnasium…They had fliers written up that said "We love you Dong and Andy" with a big heart…and as soon as they walked in the room, it was like rock stars. I mean it was deafening the sound that came out of those kids. You know right there how much they appreciate the work these guys do, so again I really congratulate you."

Canby Kiwanis, whose mission is to serve the children of Canby, established the CARE Award to provide a monthly opportunity to recognize individual teachers, counselors, coaches and other school staff who make a difference in the lives of others and in the community. The recipients are decided by a CARE committee made up of members from Kiwanis and the community, who review the nominations and make the selection.

Lee teacher Pamela Spurgeon nominated Waldon and Lam for their outstanding and gracious efforts at Lee.

"I have been amazed over and over again by how helpful and responsive both Andy and Dong are," Spurgeon said in the nomination. "I've shared my appreciation of their efforts with them, but I thought I would say something to you. They are both such kind, generous, gracious, helpful people. Their thoughtfulness and responsiveness never ceases to amaze me. They have a way of making you feel like you are their top priority even though I know they are helping a whole school keep running. I think they are fantastic, and I just wanted to share how great they really are."

Waldon and Lam also received a plaque and rewards from local businesses in recognition of her efforts. Local sponsors of the CARE Award include Canby Kiwanis, Columbia Bank, DirectLink, Wild Hare, Backstop Bar & Grill, Rice Time, Gwynn's Coffeehouse, Human Bean and Cutsforth's Thriftway.
