Carus teacher's positivity earns her local award
Each month, Canby Kiwanis and Canby School District honor a district staff member with the Canby Area Recognition of Excellence Award. For April, they presented the award to Carus Elementary kindergarten teacher Nicole Nelson.
Carus Secretary Mary Young nominated Nelson for the award because of the teacher's positive attitude and her kindness to all.
"Nicole shows her kids genuine love and care every single day," Young said in her nomination submission, "and all her students know that she is truly on their team and will do whatever it takes to help them succeed."
Canby Kiwanis, whose mission is to serve the children of Canby, established the CARE Award to provide a monthly opportunity to recognize individual teachers, counselors, coaches and other school staff who make a difference in the lives of others and in the community. The recipients are decided by a CARE committee made up of members from Kiwanis and the community, who review the nominations and make the selection.
Young noted that Nelson's impact extends even beyond her current classroom.
"Former students still look to her as a trusted mentor and a source of support," Young said.
She added, "Colleagues benefit from Nicole's kindness on a daily basis. She is always ready to encourage, support and help find the humor in stressful situations."
Nelson also received a plaque and rewards from local businesses in recognition of her efforts. Local sponsors of the CARE Award include Canby Kiwanis, Columbia Bank, DirectLink, The Wild Hare, Backstop Bar & Grill, Rice Time, The Human Bean, Cutsforth's Thriftway, Gwynn's Coffeehouse, and Team Spirit.
