Canby Gators holding plant fundraiser
The Canby Gator Swim team is holding a fundraiser to add on to the swim center's outdoor covered space and allow visiting swimmers, coaches and referees to stay dry during a rainy swim meet. This year, the team will be holding a plant sale on June 2 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 25159 Butteville Road in Aurora.
The swim team used to host meets providing covered outdoor space with tents, but during the 2016-17 season its largest tent crumpled under the weight of snow and rain. Last year the team held a plant sale to build a community picnic structure at the Canby Swim Center. Completed now, the structure is open to the public year round. The team adds vinyl walls during swim meets for hosting visiting teams and keeping referees dry.
"This year we overheard an official saying, 'This is the first time I've ever been to a swim meet in Canby without rain falling in my lunch,'" said Bill Hayhurst.
The team hopes the fundraiser will generate enough funds to add permanent movable walls to the structure as well as improve the storage facilities used at the pool, he added.
The team found last year's plant sale was a good way to connect with the community, promote local products and businesses as well as allowing all team members to have a lot of fun. Gator swimmers from age 5 to 21 will help set up the sale and assist customers by carrying purchases to their cars.
There will be hundreds of plants for sale including specimen trees, native plants, flowering shrubs, conifers, fruit trees, perennials, hens and chicks, sedums, veggie starts and more. All proceeds will go to the Gator Swim Team.
Jamboree Gardens is hosting the sale. Since it's on private property, they ask attendees to honor the five mile speed limit on the driveway, follow the signs and instructions for parking. There are no on-site restrooms.
