Canby dancers unwrap sweet performance in 'The Nutcracker'
Audiences will once again have the opportunity to travel to the Land of Sweets with the cast of Allegro Dance Studio's "The Nutcracker."
Dancers will take the stage for the third annual show at the Richard R. Brown Fine Arts Center on Dec. 15 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 16 at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.
"[Audiences] can expect a family-friendly production of the holiday classic," said Allegro ballet instructor Amanda Staehely. "It's a really family-friendly event with professional details…almost a professional production at a family-friendly cost."
Allegro first produced the Nutcracker in 2016 and has continued the tradition since then. Nearly 200 dancers make up the cast this year.
"It's impressive to see the kids work so hard on professional level choreography…these kids really step up to the plate every year and it's amazing to see," Staehely said.
Staehely said she is excited to see Allegro's dancers evolve and grow in their roles each year.
"One thing that I love is our little girl who is playing Clara this year, two years ago was an angel," Staehely said.
She was the angel who had the privilege of guiding Clara and the prince in Act two of the show.
"And now she gets to be Clara," Staehely said. "She's on the other side of it. And so it's kind of gone full-circle already."
Another role Staehely is particularly eager to see carried out on stage is that of Drosselmeyer. She will have the opportunity to watch her own dad, Jerry Simnitt, play the role for the first time this year.
Whether it's enjoying the festivities of the elaborate party scene, watching tiny dancers come out from Mother Ginger's dress or being captivated by the quietness of snow falling in the snow scene, there is something for everyone to enjoy in Allegro's show.
Staehely and Allegro invite the community to watch the Nutcracker in Canby as a way to kick off the holiday season and to support the community. Staehely suggested it could be a fun tradition to start with kids or grandkids.
Tickets for the show are available online at tututix.com/allegrodanceor/ or by calling TutuTix toll-free at 435-222-2849. Any remaining tickets will be available at the door.
