The Canby First Friday program is morphing into a First Thursday with hopes of bolstering attendance

A Canby public meeting in early February led to changing action in downtown Canby. Starting March 7, people can attend First Thursdays from 5-8 p.m., according to an announcement at the Feb. 20 City Council meeting.

The public meeting, which included business owners, city officials and members of the public, led to the change from First Friday to a First Thursday event. Those who offered their thoughts felt that Fridays competed with youth sports and many people getting out of town for the weekend. At the same time business owners noticed that Thursday nights tend to be full of cars moving through downtown.

"We decided to create a unique experience downtown," said Calvin LeSuer, Canby's economic development and tourism coordinator. "Each month will offer a themed event and the first one, Charmed with Canby, is a fundraiser for the Canby Historical Society.

There's a list of the other months:

-April is an art theme;

-May will be a Mexican theme tied to Cinco de Mayo;

-June is fitness and health;

-July is Thursday July 4, and will feature the businesses that will be open on the holiday;

-August is the Dahlia Display contest;

-September is non-profit night;

-October is the Buskers Ball with entertainment all over downtown; and

-December will be on Friday with the same theme of 'Light up the Night'.
