Going to 'Market'
Canby's Farmers Market is back, spreading its produce, fruit and assorted vendor wings on Saturday, May 18 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
And this year's market is under new management as Alexis Purcell is the new market manager, along with plenty of help from daughter, Sydney Purcell.
Fortunately, the Purcells are not novices in the farmers market realm. Sydney runs the Wilsonville Farmers Market and was approached by the Canby Livability Coalition about taking charge of Canby's efforts, according to Sydney.
"Wilsonville's farmers market is pretty active and gets a lot of people and they asked my mom if she'd consider trying to improve Canby's," said Sydney. "We've done a lot of reaching out to farmers in the area, as well as potential vendors in the (Canby-Wilsonville) area and have had a nice response."
There will definitely be some changes when the farmer's market sets up shop each Saturday through the summer on First and Ivy streets, but Sydney said she and her mom are hoping to build on the groundwork of what's come before.
Still, she admitted, it has been a lot of work getting things in place. Sydney said right now they've got a list of 30 vendors committed to every Saturday. They also are offering vendors the chance to pick and choose dates they'd like to participate.
Also planned is live music, a children's produce club, a "bring your dog" event, and hope to involve the Canby FFA in some way.
"Taking this over has been a lot more work than I, or my mom, thought it would be, but we're kind of used to it," said Sydney. "We're hoping people will come out and get involved in what we're doing here."
While the website is still a work in progress, this year's Canby Farmers Market is doing a lot of its early communication through Facebook. Just look for Canby Farmers Market on Facebook to find the page.
