Canby community gathered to celebrate the graduating class of 2019 on Friday, June 7

Just as he welcomed the class into the high school their freshman year, Principal Greg Dinse started the ceremony off by ushering in the graduating class while wearing full highland dress and playing the bagpipes.

The choirs sang, the band played, and staff and students offered speeches.

Senior Lillian Lockwood, who this year joined Canby's first girls' wrestling team, encouraged students with her speech titled, "You Do You."

"As a senior, I've come to realize that as long as I like what I'm doing, it shouldn't matter what everybody else is doing," Lockwood said. "Being different makes you you—makes you desirable to a job, makes you able to do things others can't do, makes you original."

Soon it came time for each student to walk across the graduation stage to receive their hard-earned diploma.

Of the hundreds of seniors, 13 graduated with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. They are Makena Phillips, Lauryn Crum, Lillian Lockwood, Emma Gingerich, Connor Saltmarsh, Jessie Thompson, Trevor Taylor, Maren Gingerich, Rose Phillips, Madi Miller, Tess Reding Hoffart, Sadie Thomas and Nathaniel McNichols.

And, as senior speaker Brandon Morris said, "Just like that, [their] 13-year sentence [is] up."
