The school district will again offer free breakfast and lunch to those 18 and under

With the heat showing up this week, many are seeing visions of pool time and summer vacations, but some are wondering how they will afford to feed their children.

Fortunately, Canby School District offers a summer meals program, providing free breakfasts and lunches for anyone ages 18 and under from June 24 through Aug. 16. Adults are encouraged to accompany children, and can purchase breakfast for $2.80 or lunch for $3.80.

"Food insecurity rates in Oregon have recently decreased. Today, about 552,900 Oregonians are food insecure and of those 194,070 are children. That still equates to 1 in 7 people," said Galina Dobson, Director of Nutrition Services. "By operating programs like Summer Food Service, we help bridge this nutrition gap.

"Our programs are filled with tasty, nutritious foods in a fun, safe environment," Dobson added.

But the free meals aren't just for those who struggle to afford food. Canby residents capitalize on the free meals for a variety of reasons.

Last year, a grandma who was new to the district brought her grandkids to see the school and play on the playground. Another mom said her kids look forward to the summer lunches every year and would rather eat at the school together than at home.

In fact, so many capitalized on the free meals that more than 12,800 meals were served last year, according to the district, and they hope to serve even more this year.

All meals are limited in fat, calories and sodium, according to the district, with plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Lunches include a choice of entrees plus a variety of fruits and vegetables and milk. Each day, kids have a choice of a hot entrée like chicken nuggets, beef and cheese tacos and more or a cold sandwich.

The Summer Food Service Program will operate under the following schedule:

-Knight Elementary School: June 24-July 26, lunch 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

-Trost Elementary School: June 26-July 19, breakfast at 8-9 a.m. and lunch 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

-Baker Prairie Middle School: June 26-July 19, breakfast 8-9 a.m. and lunch 11 a.m. to noon

-Wait Park: July 29-Aug. 16, lunch 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
