Parks like Knights Bridge and Feyrer often fill up and must close, particularly along rivers

Hot temperatures in the summer encourage people to flock to Clackamas County parks to find relief from the heat. County parks including Metzler, Feyrer, Eagle Fern, Barton, Wagonwheel and Knights Bridge are great areas for residents to stay cool and enjoy outdoor and water-based recreation activities.

However, the county wants to remind visitors that parking lots at these parks fill up quickly on hot summer days, particularly at popular parks along the Clackamas and Molalla Rivers.

Barton Park in Boring and the Carver Boat Ramp in Oregon City often reach full capacity during the summer, especially on hot weekend days. When this happens, County Parks' staff will close the area for a few hours or the remainder of the day to help ensure safety for all visitors.

"At some point on an extremely hot summer day, we can hit our full parking capacity by late morning and are forced to close the park to additional visitors. While several thousand people would like to access the river from the park, we also have responsibilities to those people staying with us in reserved camping and shelter areas, said Rick Gruen, Clackamas County Parks Manager.

The county will publicize closures on its website,, and through social media, when it becomes necessary. It's important for people to avoid the area around closed parks to minimize traffic congestion.

The county encourages residents to visit other nearby county parks with less congestion, such as Eagle Fern Park and Metzler Park. Both offer day use features, such as fishing, hiking and others.
