The yard of Lee and Vickie Wells is the garden club's pick for September Yard of the Month

There was plenty of work to be done, work that they've accomplished quite nicely, thank you. Vickie saw potential in the yard and had a passion to return the yard back to its previous grandeur.

That work has paid off as the Canby Garden Club has name Vickie and Lee's efforts the Yard of the Month for September. Located at 30421 S. Dryland Road, the property has certainly got plenty to offer for yard fans.

"Our yard, like many other yards I'm sure, is most colorful in the spring months and early summer when daffodils, rhodies, forthysia, tulips, peonies, and many varieties of iris and lilies fill the yard with color," said Vickie. "Accompanied with the snowball tree, camellias, lily of the valley, the flowering plum tree and many shrubs can make for a colorful sight early on in the year."

Vickie said she enjoys gardening and wants other to enjoy her yard, which also includes 40 acres with horses, fruit trees, grapes and, of course, plenty of flowers and other plantings.

Lee nominated the yard for his wife because of the hard work she's put into it. However, he has some things he likes, too. He enjoys red flowers and anything that produces food. Vickie likes to include flowers that have special meaning and create memories – lilies give to her by friends and co-workers, a Julia Child rose in her grandfather's memory, two roses from her grandma's yard, and a hibiscus from their previous yard of many years.

"A bit of trivia - My grandma was a longtime member of the Hillsboro Garden Club. The vision of my grandparent's large and expansive yard that exploded with color are still very vivid in my memory," said Vickie. "My mom also loved her flowers and the beauty that they added to the large yards and patio at home. These were two very special women who have proven to be so inspirational to me in my life."
