Four more minors arrested in Canby
Police arrested four additional minors today on assault charges related to the incident that occurred outside the varsity football game at Canby High School last Friday. In total, police have arrested six.
According to Police Chief Bret Smith, it's still possible there could be more arrests. He said one or two minors were involved in an incident that preceded and potentially even caused the Friday night fight. Canby Police will provide this information to the county juvenile department to determine whether or not to press charges against those individuals.
Smith declined to describe the circumstances surrounding the prior incident, but suggested it was "junior high stuff."
Throughout the investigation, Smith noted cooperation has led to clarity.
"The school's been cooperative. We've had a lot of family members whose children were involved appear to be very cooperative and trying to work to understand the situation," Smith said, "which has allowed us to have some clarity and a better understanding of the incident so we can make appropriate recommendations to the juvenile department and to the schools for however they make their decisions."
Neither incidents appear to have racial or gang ties, Smith said.
"So from a safety perspective, for people who have had a fear about bringing their kids to school," Smith said, "we're not finding there to be validity there."
