Adult cooking class, registration for free swim lessons and more going on in the Canby and Molalla areas



Adults and teens 14 and up are invited to a free Mexican cooking class at the Molalla Public Library on Wednesday, Feb. 12 at 6 p.m. to join Araceli Cruz from La Popular Catering Service for the second in a series of Mexican cooking classes. Learn to make tortillas. Space is limited.


The Molalla Aquatic Center will be closed for the Molalla High School district meet on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 14-15. The public is invited to come out and support the high school swim team. Entry costs are $6 for adults and $4 for students.


Registration opens on Feb. 17 at 9 a.m. for free spring break swim lessons at the Molalla Aquatic Center March 23-27. Space is limited.


The Molalla Public Library will be closed on Feb. 17 in observance of President's Day.


The next GriefShare meeting takes place Monday, Feb. 17. GriefShare is a support group for those who are dealing with the death of a loved one. The group meets at the Molalla Adult Community Center every Monday evening from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Each week covers a specific topic of grief followed by an open support group discussion. Each week is self-contained, so anyone is welcome to join at any time. This 13-week session will run through May 11, 2020. The Molalla Community Planning Organization will meet Wednesday, Feb. 19 from 6:30 - 7:45 p.m. at the Molalla Public Library. The CPO offers an opportunity for those living in the unincorporated area surrounding the City of Molalla to learn about and become involved in land-use issues that may affect them. Friends of the Canby Public Library will hold its annual meeting on Thursday, Feb. 20, in the Willamette Room at 5:30 p.m. The meeting is open to anyone interested in FOL and what it does.


This year marks the 75th anniversary of the famous World War II battle for Iwo Jima and the 25th year that the Canby-Aurora Veterans of Foreign Wars post has commemorated the battle. The VFW will host a ceremony on Feb. 22 at 10 a.m. at Ackerman School and Canby Adult Center. Anyone who wishes to honor these veterans is welcome to attend. The highlight of the event will be a flag raising and playing of taps, 21-gun salute, the ceremonial spreading of sand on the memorial, massing of the colors and commentary from several dignitaries. The Mark Prairie Historical Society will meeting on Saturday, Feb. 22, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Canby Public Library's Willamette Room. Carol Palmer from the Canby Heritage and Landmark Commission, and MPHS member, will discuss care of headstones at historic cemeteries at about 11 a.m. The meeting is open to the public.

District 63 firefighters will hold its 46th annual bingo night at the Donald Fire Station on Saturday, March 7. Dinner is from 4:30-6:30 p.m., with bingo starting at 6:30 p.m. There will be raffle prizes, door prizes and cash for bingo game winners. Pie and ice cream will be served for $4. Bingo games cost 50 cents per game and an additional 50 cents for each extra card.
