Now seven, who tested positive for COVID-19, have died at Marquis at Hope Village Post-Acute Rehab

Three more residents of Marquis at Hope Village Post-Acute Rehab have died after testing positive for COVID-19.

"Our Marquis at Hope Village facility team and the entire Marquis organization are grieving due to the loss of three additional residents that recently passed away due to the coronavirus," said April Diaz, Marquis Companies vice president of clinical services. "Our hearts continue to go out to the family and friends of these residents, and to the staff who have cared deeply and tirelessly in their final days."

The latest deaths bring the total at the facility to seven, all within two weeks of the first positive tests.

Due to privacy laws, Marquis declined to share specific demographic information about the residents who died such as their age, whether they had underlying conditions and whether they were on hospice.

But Diaz did offer the following information.

"Marquis at Hope Village Post-Acute Rehab serves the aging population," Diaz said. "When our residents come to us for care, they are in a medically fragile state. Many have chronic conditions that put them at high risk for their health to rapidly change. Sadly, when they are infected with the coronavirus, because of the nature of the infection, they often don't have the strength to fight it."

In all cases, Diaz said, the clinical team at the facility has honored the residents' and families' wishes in the event of an emergency related to hospitalization, medical interventions, and whether to resuscitate if a person stops breathing or has no pulse. Residents and family members make these decisions in advance as part of the advanced care planning process.

Presently, a total of 69 residents and staff members at the Marquis rehab facility have tested positive for COVID-19, including 33 of 38 residents. However, in its latest report ending June 14, the Oregon Health Authority reported 92 cases at the facility.

According to Diaz, the higher number reflects contact tracing completed by the county. The county has been testing families of the staff at the Marquis rehab facility and any of their contacts.

"Unfortunately, some of these family members are also testing positive and are now isolating in their homes," Diaz said.

The Marquis rehab facility sits next to the Marquis Assisted Living facility on the Hope Village campus. Fortunately, the outbreak has remained isolated to the rehab facility. Marquis tested all staff and residents at the next-door assisted living facility, and all tests returned negative.
